The rapid spread of Callinectes sapidus and Portunus segnis poses an increasing threat to biodiversity and fisheries in the Mediterranean. To support efforts in understanding and managing these invasions, SPA/RAC is publishing two new reference documents.

1. Status of the Blue Crabs in the Mediterranean

This document provides a comprehensive scientific synthesis on the biology, distribution, invasion history, ecological traits, and socio-economic impacts of C. sapidus and P. segnis in the Mediterranean basin.

2. Best Practices and Management Measures of the Blue Crabs in the Mediterranean

This report compiles concrete actions and strategies implemented in countries including Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, and Türkiye. It proposes five strategic actions to guide future responses:

  1. Monitoring ecological impacts to understand local dynamics and inform management.
  2. Targeted control and fisheries measures to reduce populations and support local economies.
  3. Raising public awareness on consumption and socio-ecological implications.
  4. Early detection and rapid response to prevent further spread.
  5. Enhancing international cooperation for coordinated regional action.

These two publications were produced by SPA/RAC within the bilateral agreement between UNEP/MAP and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE).
